Oracle principals
developed early interest and expertise in sustainable design during the
energy crisis of the 1970's and have translated that interest into a corporate
commitment to a sustainable future for us all.
Oracle owner and chief
architect, Thom Bohlen, had these thoughts regarding sustainability:
"If we're going to
practice architecture that is truly sustainable, then we have to think
beyond how we design and create healthy buildings. We need to be modeling
day-to-day choices. Are we choosing to drive vehicles that deliver low
fuel consumption and low emissions? Are we choosing building products
that are from renewable sources or recycled materials? Are we recycling
in our homes and in our offices? Are we choosing to develop and live in
sustainable communities?"
In support of its
commitment to sustainability, Oracle principals drive hybrid-electric
vehicles which deliver 40-50 miles per gallon and meet the standard of
"Super Ultra Low Emissions".
Design of their personal
residence is underway and will include such sustainable features as natural
daylighting, passive and active solar, rain water harvesting, use of gray
water for irrigation and fuel cell applications.
Oracle principals
share a long-term vision of developing a co-housing neighborhood that
would feature private residential space integrated with common shared
space for a "common house", gardening, recreation, guest rooms, a common
home-office support facility, and children's play and care spaces. The
co-housing concept re-introduces many of the advantages of traditional
villages within the context of 21st century life while it provides a model
of sustainable living.
